About the Merchant Navy Association
For 38 years, the Merchant Navy Association (MNA) has remained true to its founding values and constitution. Formed to unite the Merchant Navy community, we continue to champion the interests, welfare and recognition of all those who have served — and still serve — in the UK’s Merchant Navy.
Our Association is run by dedicated volunteers who have served across every type of vessel and in every rank, bringing a wealth of lived experience and a broad, inclusive outlook to everything we do.
Our Branches: The Heart of the MNA
Our network of local branches is the beating heart of the Association. Through these branches, we provide social connection, mutual support and a strong sense of belonging for our members.
Most branches meet monthly to catch up on local activities, enjoy the company of fellow mariners, exchange stories, and, more often than not, share a friendly drink. Branches also play an active role in their communities — attending local and national events, giving talks, promoting maritime awareness, and representing the Merchant Navy at remembrance and commemorative occasions.
Every Remembrance Day, MNA members parade proudly alongside the Armed Forces across the UK, ensuring that the Merchant Navy, often described as the “Fourth Service”, is never forgotten, and that the immense sacrifices of our seafarers are honoured.
Who We Are and What We Do
The Merchant Navy Association is a UK‑based maritime charity and membership organisation. Our mission is to represent, support and promote the interests of all merchant seafarers – serving and retired – as well as their dependants. We are unique in embracing every rank and rating across the generations.
Our Core Objectives
Support & Welfare
We assist serving and former seafarers and their dependants who face hardship or distress caused by poverty, sickness, disability or other difficulties. We also provide support to the families of those who have lost their lives in service.
Recognition & Awareness
We work to ensure the Merchant Navy’s contribution to the UK — both in peace and conflict — is properly recognised. We promote the Merchant Navy as the “Fourth Service,” raise awareness of seafarers’ sacrifices, and champion the nation’s maritime heritage.
Comradeship & Community
We foster connection, camaraderie and fellowship among seafarers. Our branches offer a vital social network where former and serving mariners can meet, share experiences and support one another.
Education, Advice & Information
We provide information and guidance for the seafaring community and signpost resources relating to careers at sea, welfare services, and maritime organisations.
Our Commitment
As a registered charity, the MNA operates under a constitution that places the needs of the maritime community at its centre. We strive to be a national voice for merchant seafarers, ensuring that their interests are represented both ashore and afloat.
